Block printing or wood block printing is a manual printing technique, an ancestral know-how from Rajasthan in northern India.
It all starts with a pattern drawn on a sheet of paper, the design is then engraved by hand on a block of wood. A buffer is finally made from this block.
The printing is then carried out in successive layers of color, some patterns may require more than ten layers of printing.
For each layer, the stamp is dipped in ink and applied with strong pressure to the support.
The fabrics are then washed by hand in large basins, carrying out several baths to fix the plant colors.
They are dried in the sun in the open air on the ground or on the terraces of homes and then ironed. Every step of this printing process is done entirely by hand. Each piece of fabric is unique. These fabrics are “living”, they acquire a patina over time. The irregularities and color nuances of these prints make them so charming.
